Google Analytics is one of the best free reporting tools.

Google Verify

Small Plugin to make Google Webmaster Tools site verification a bit easier. Works with the Meta Tag method and no template adjustements are needed. Download from the Joomla Site

Load the plugin click on the plugin in the plugin manager

1. On Google Webmaster Tools page, choose Meta Tag for verification type.
2. ONLY enter the numbers and letters between the “” (including = sign)into the plug-in.
3. Enable Plug-in. Save.
4. Click Verify on Google Webmaster tools. Verified and done!

Xmap

Xmap is a Site map generator component for Joomla, it’s based on the popular Joomap component. Xmap allows you to create a map of your site using the structure of your menus. Download from the Joomla Site

The key to xmap is you must create a menu item that points to xmap which will show up under internal links when you create a menu item. I always create the link in a menu I am not showing on my site

Once you create the menu link , choose xmap from the components menu, then choose options >> preferences this will show you the xml and html sitemap links.

This Plugin will add the Google Analytics Tracker Code to your site automagically. Download from the Joomla Site

Load the Plugin and enable it, under plugin manger choose the plugin and enter the UA- code from your Google Analytics  account. As an alternative, you can add the Google code to the index.php file in you template directory. Not the one in the root.

Many Small Business online store owners forget to use the feature in Zen Cart for Meta Tags. Zen Cart does a great job of SEO, but you can use “long tail keywords”  and more effective descriptions to obtain higher ranking in the search engines for your products.

1. In the admin go to Catalog >Categories / Products
2. Select your Category
3. In the list of products the icon on the left is for meta tags select that icon
4. Here you will be able to modify the title, description and keyword meta data

There are several steps to start to optimize you Zen Cart Online store for SEO – Search Engine Optimization. Submitting a site map to Google lets you tell Google about you site. While Zen Cart does a really good job of  being optimized for the web, the benefit of creating and submitting you sitemap in Google Webmaster tools is you will be able to see if there are any errors going on with the site that might impact you search Engine rankings. Like redirects which are preventing your pages from being searched or duplicate keywords and short descriptions.

So I recommend downloading and installing this module for Zen Cart XML Sitemap

Once installed this module will automatically update you sitemap when your store is updated. Products , Categories and EZ-Pages will be included in your sitemap.

Blogs can be used a multitude of ways for a small business. You can use a blog to create a community, offer suggestions or create reviews of products. Recently, I have had great success in creating a blog external to a customers site offering product reviews.

While this customers particular product is saturated in the Search engines by writing product reviews, we have captured customers in the research phase of their buying decision driving traffic to their main site. A blog of this type allow you to create external backlinks, anchored text and promoted properly can be picked up by the blog directories to promote even further This technique has been very effective for the long tail keywords of particular product searches.

By starting a basic blog on wordpress.com, you can still use you keywords or company branding in the site name building trust and loyalty with you customers.

Magnetic One has a fantastic management interface for Zen Cart. The Windows based software program runs locally and with direct database access to you web server , will update your online store in real time.  Should you not have direct Database access, there is a bridge that will enable you to push updates to the web server. I will Cover how to obtain direct access on Godaddy in a future post

This is a feature rich application and a vast improvement over the Zen Cart admin. Purchase one license and you can manage multiple stores.

Google utilizes a technique called page ranking to determine as one of the factors to determine organic search engine results for a website. Pages on your website that are believed to be important to Google, receive a higher page rank. Search Engine tool such as Google Webmaster tools require an XML sitemap. Given the dynamic nature of Joomla, it is almost impossible to create a sitemap every-time you updated you site with a new article. The Solution is a free module from the Joomla site called Xmap.

Installed like any other module in Joomla, Xmap allows you to create a map of you site based on your menu’s. Every time your menu is updated you sitemap is automatically updated. Google will then search the index.php string you add to Webmaster tolls and updat the Map.

In addition, you have the option to exclude menus and create an HTML sitmap as well. There is also some statistical infomation and control over  the prioritys and change frequency.

Xmap is one of the higest rated sitemap modules as well as one of the most popular. Xmap can be downloaded from the Joomla site

The Zen Cart team announced a vulnerability has been discovered in the admin section of v1.3.8 (and previous versions). To take advantage of this vulnerability any attacker must know the URL of your admin section.

A security patch has been released along with recommendations for securing your site .

To install the security update you will need to do the following:

• rename the /admin folder and modifying the configure.php file
• Load the security patch files
• Modify the /includes/functions/html_output.php
